What carbon calculation covers today
Scope 1, Scope 2, and two Scope 3 categories (purchases, travel), each on sourced and verified emission factors, never estimated.
1. Real factors, never estimated by Normivia
Every emission factor (electricity, road diesel, natural gas) comes from ADEME's Base Carbone®, published under the Etalab Open License 2.0: its commercial reuse is explicitly permitted. Normivia never invents or adjusts a figure.
2. Electricity varies by year, fuels don't
The emission factor for electricity depends on the French production mix, which changes every year (more or less nuclear, hydro, gas depending on conditions): a year therefore has to be specified for an electricity calculation. Road diesel and natural gas have stable combustion factors that don't depend on the year.
3. File import, same automatic mapping as Reference Data
A CSV or Excel file is automatically recognized on its columns (energy type, quantity, year, label), with the same French header tolerances as the data diagnostic. A blank file template, with examples, is available from your Normivia contact.
4. Nothing is ever counted silently
A line whose energy type isn't recognized, or whose year has no verified factor, is never ignored or counted as zero: it appears explicitly in the results as not calculable, with the reason.
Scope 3: 2 categories automated out of 15
Explicit scopeScope 3 (value chain emissions) covers 15 GHG Protocol categories. Two are automated today, as a spend-based estimate: spend by NAF sector, multiplied by a real monetary ratio from ADEME's Base Carbone® (SDES/INSEE, FIGARO model).
- Category 1: purchased goods and services, typically 60-80% of total Scope 3 for a non-industrial company.
- Category 6: business travel, same mechanism, ADEME sectors restricted to travel agencies and transport.
Category 3: ruled out after verification
Not missing dataCategory 3 (fuel and energy, the "upstream" of the already-captured Scope 1/2) was considered then ruled out on 2026-10-07. Base Carbone® does break down each combustion factor into two "items" (Upstream / Combustion), but without a text label reliably distinguishing which is which via the public API: ADEME's documentation points to the GLEC v3.1 report (external, unverified) for the exact detail. Rather than guess, and risk skewing both the existing Scope 1/2 and this new category, it remains uncovered for now.
The other 13 categories: tailored advisory
Full Carbon Footprint™Capital goods, upstream/downstream freight, waste, employee commuting, leased assets, processing/use/end-of-life of sold products, franchises, investments: each requires a methodology specific to the client's product or sector, never transposable from one client to another: not just another generic calculator — an advisory engagement.
